An Tribute To David Bowie – The Starbucks Parody Song

Hello everyone, like virtually every one else I know, I was both shocked and saddened by the news of David Bowie’s passing yesterday. He was an iconic singer/songwriter and also a huge roll model for people over the decades who didn’t quite fit societies norms.

Something I love reading in blog posts are song parodies, rewritng the lyrics of popular songs with lyrics about totally different subjects.   One blogger that does a fantastic job of this is Tim who writes Slouching Towards Thatcham. His parenting parodies include A Thatcham Rhapsody ( to the tune of Bohemian Rhapsody) and Fairytale Of Thatcham (to the tune of Fairytale Of New York).

I have always wanted to have a go at doing this, but very much doubted my ability to re-write the lyrics of a song without making a huge balls up of it. Today I decided today to give it a go in honour of this awesome man (David Bowie, not Tim)  I’m not sure everyone will think rewriting the lyrics to such an iconic song is a proper tribute to the man, but it is done with the greatest respect to him.

However hours after finishing the rough draft of the sing, and getting ready to write it up on the laptop, I saw that Tim had also chosen to do a parody of a Bowie song. Thankfully he didn’t chose the same one as me, so I will continue to write up my effort.  I will include a link to it here because as always Tim has done a brilliant job. Kids In Cars (to the tune of Life On Mars

What I achieved is a coffee shop parody called  Starbucks.  I hope you like it…………

An Tribute To David Bowie - The Starbucks Parody Song

Starbucks ( to the tune of Starman)

Didn’t have a good night, so my patience is low

The day is going past far to slow

I need some caffeine and I,  need it quick

Lotta sugar too

Then the tiredness just seems to fade

came back  like a human on a wave of phase

That was no latte, that was a brewed coffee grande

Chorus

There’s a Starbucks waiting down the street

They never pay their taxes but their cakes are hard to beat

There’s a Starbucks barista at the till

He’ll ask you how your names spelt

but he’ll get it all wrong still

They tell us

Let the coffee wake you

Let the cheesecake fill you

In all the Starbucks cafe’s

I had to drink something so I picked on you

But tax dodging’s not what you should do

Pay up your taxes

It’s the right thing now for you to do

If not I’m switching to Neros tonight

They pay their taxes to the man alright

They do fab muffins and their pastries are a delight

Go To Chorus

La,la,la,la,la

La,la,la,la,la

So there is my first attempt at a song parody. It wasn’t too bad was it ( please don’t tell me it was terrible). If you would like to hear some more parodies (I have a taste for it now) please let me know in the comments. If you hated it, you had better tell me that too…….

I’ve just read Tim’s parody and loved it, despite my favourite Bowie song being changed forever in my mind lol. I think this is a nice way to remember such a great artist. It shouldn’t be all seriousness and tears – he gave us The Laughing Gnome after all. 😉
    Nicely done. :) X

Ahhh I don’t know the tune of the song…so will need to look it up. I was so sad Bowie passed but have to admit didn’t know a lot of his work. However, just reading the lyrics really did make me smile and you definitely have the knack! The Starbucks and tax thing won’t get old!! Thanks for sharing with #bestandworst xx

I bet once you play it you will know it. I thought I din’t know that many Bowie hits, but when I watched the program on him the other night, I was singing along to all of them Xx

I am a Coffee#1 drinker myself. I think Starbucks chocolate cheesecake is to die for, but im too principled ( and poor) to buy it. Im glad you liked it, you are still the parody king Xx

Ooooh, good job Tracey! I’m afraid I don’t know the song (Mr W wouldn’t forgive me if he knew that, doesn’t sound like you’ll be too impressed either…!!) but it takes a lot of skill to comically rewrite song lyrics! Go you!!

He really was ageless wasnt he. The thought that there will never be another quite like him is heartbreaking. The world is a duller place today

I tried singing it in my head lol. You funny woman. Hope he’s drinking a huge mocha latte or more likely a double espresso (given what a cool guy he was) up in Heaven. I’m still shell shocked. Can’t believe he’s gone.

PS Following your lovely comment on my blog last week re coolness, I have to say you’re so bloody on my wavelength. I KNEW you’d write about Bowie too this week. Love ya x

You are making me blush. Although after the news of Rickman yesterday i’ve gone from sadness to a bit numb. No more, please……..

It was truly a sad loss to a great legend. You did a great job with your first parody. I have tried them before with a fail which is amazing that I used to write tons of lyrics to songs when I was in a band. Think I may have gotten burnt out on it and just haven’t picked it back up again. Thanks for linking with #momsterslink 💌Trista

I think it’s possibly harder to rewrite someone elses song than to write your own, because there are stricter rules about what you can do, in keeping it in line with the origional song ( I would guess) xx
